Akpabio bags City People Gov of the Year Award
The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio has again been honoured as the Governor of the Year 2011 by the City People Magazine for overall best performance in Infrastructural Development and Education.
Governor Akpabio received the award during the 15th Edition of the City People Magazine Award for Excellence, which took place at the Dome, Tafewa Belewa Square, Lagos at the weekend.
The organizers of the award and publishers of City People Magazine had enumerated the Governor’s sterling performances in initiating and implementing free and compulsory education for all Nigerian children residing in Akwa Ibom, which makes the policy very unique and distinct leading to an massive growth in schools enrollment in the State.
Similarly, the enormous transformation in infrastructure that has taken place in the State under Governor Akpabio also attracted independent assessors from the City People Group, upon which they based their award. It could be recalled that this popular news magazine also honoured Governor Akpabio as Governor of the Year South South in 2008.
Presenting the award to the Governor, Chief Bisi Olatide of the BISCOM TV commended Governor Godswill Akpabio for unleashing tangible dividends of democracy for Akwa Ibom people and noted that the award was well deserved.
Governor Akpabio, who was represented by the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah thanked the organizers for recognizing and identifying with the modest efforts of Akpabio’s administration toward making Akwa Ibom the model State in Nigeria.
He dedicated the award first to the Almighty God and then to the hitherto hopeless children of Akwa Ibom State.
“This award belongs to orphans and the less privileged who were abandoned but today have hopes as leaders of tomorrow”, he said.
Particularly, Governor Godswill Akpabio thanked Akwa Ibom people for giving him the mandate to serve them. He said the journey which started in 2007 and got reaffirmed in 2011 has yielded positive fruits today subsumed under the Uncommon Transformation of Akwa Ibom State.
He urged Nigerians to find time to visit Akwa Ibom State which is the fastest growing State and Nigerian’s newest destination, to savour the atmosphere brought by the infrastructural renaissance.
Some of them include the construction of over 260 new roads, a brand new International Airport, over 12 bridges and 3 flyovers, a brand new Governor’s Lodge, Nigerian first e-Library, 5 new Cottage Hospital, first in Africa Pipe Jacking Drainage system, a world Class Business and Entertainment Centre, and numerous life touching programmes, such as free health care for children, expectant mother and the elderly; comprehensive village-to-village rural electricity project; training and empowering 3000youths with N500,000 each under Integrated Farmer’s Scheme and training and empowering of 3100 women with N250,000 for commercial agriculture under the Women Agriculture Project(WADEP).
He said, the people-oriented and visionary programme of the Akpabio administration since 2007, has re-defined Akwa Ibom as a State where government can work.
This latest award by the City People Magazine is coming ahead of the Silver Bird TV Man of the Year Award on Governor Akpabio on the 5th of May, 2011.
This award on Governor Akpabio is a further affirmation of other awards by notable organizations and institutions which include Commander of the Order of Niger (CON) by President Goodluck Jonathan, Sun Man of the year2011, Congressional Recognition and Commendation by the United State Congress,the first civilian Governor to be honoured by the Nigerian Defence Academy, Honourary Doctorate Degree from reputable institutions in the country such as University of Nigeria, Nsukka; University of Calabar, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka; Governor of the Year by Tribune Newspaper; Man of the Year 2009 by Daily Independent;National Daily Man of the Year 2009 and 2010; Good Governance Award by NUJ and a host of others.
