Akwa Ibom Polls: ACN Defaults in Forensic Test
The planned forensic analysis of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) electoral materials in connection with the April 26, 2011 governorship election in Akwa Ibom State which was scheduled for Monday, June 27, 2011 was botched at the instance of the legal team of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), INEC has confirmed.
The forensic examination of the materials used in the elections was in compliance with the order of the Akwa Ibom State Election Petition Tribunal. This followed the prayers of the legal team of Senator John Akpanudoedehe (ACN) and Chief Godswill Akpabio (PDP) who are the petitioner and respondent respectively.
However, on the scheduled date to start the forensic examination of the electoral materials at INEC office in Uyo, the ACN only showed up with two old photocopy machines and asked for adjournment of the exercise. This was in sharp contrast to the PDP team which expressed its readiness for the exercise with 15 state-of-the-art forensic machines and a forensic expert said to have been flown in from Dublin, Ireland.
Addressing newsmen at the premises of INEC, the Secretary of Campaigns for the Akwa Ibom State PDP, Barrister Emmanuel Enoidem strongly condemned the opposition party for the unnecessary delays it was causing due to their unpreparedness, contrary to their public posturing that they were set for the exercise.
According to Barrister Enoidem, “By Wednesday last week our party and the ACN were in INEC preparatory to the commencement of the forensic examination today. The ACN in their characteristic manner of engaging in blatant falsehood had informed INEC that they were ready with 15 scanning machines and experts and every other thing they would need to enable them carry out the exercise.
“Today (Monday, June27, 2011) was agreed by both parties for the exercise. From what we have seen here, it is obvious that the ACN people are not ready and at their instance the exercise has been adjourned. What we have seen from them is not anywhere near what they had claimed. What we have seen are two rickety photocopy machines as against the modern OCR scanning machines that we brought. You Journalist can judge for yourselves and say who is ready for the exercise.
“In a nutshell, the PDP team are ready but the petitioners, the ACN are not ready. We brought in forensic experts from Dublin, Ireland to come and be part of the exercise but the ACN did not bring anybody in the form of an expert apart from the two lawyers who showed up from their ranks. That is a clear indication that they are not ready.
“But whatever it is, we will follow them. We will make sure that the mandate that God gave us through Akwa Ibom people is sustained and maintained no matter the antics of the losers,” Barrister Enoidem said.
However, the Counsel to the ACN, Barrister Mutiu Alaye said his team would be ready for the exercise as soon as possible noting that election petition is a long drawn exercise.
