Governor Akpabio Gets Unique Inauguration Gift…wins another Man of the Year Award
Governor Godswill Obot Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State got a unique second term inauguration gift on May 29, 2011, as he again won the Man of the Year Award from the Paradigm Communications Ltd, publishers of National Daily newspapers.
Presenting the 2010 edition of the award at a crowded ceremony at the Le Meridien Hotel and Golf Resort, Nwaniba, Akwa Ibom State , Ambassador Olusegun Olusola noted that the governor’s impressive performance compelled the newspaper to nominated him for the honour for two consecutive years.
Governor Akpabio had also won the 2009 edition of the award last year at a ceremony which took place in Lagos.
However, Olusola noted that the unique feature of this year’s award was that it had to be moved out of Lagos to Uyo, as a way of acknowledging Akpabio’s commendable strides as well as celebrating with him on his second inauguration.
The Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper, Sylvester Egbodaghe, while announcing the decision of the Board of Management of the medium to again award Akpabio the award, noted that though certain questions arose as to why the governor should again be considered, it was resolved that it would be immoral to deny a student a first position simply because he is brilliant.
He said in the gamut of names that came up for consideration, Gov Akpabio always featured and eventually towered above others on overall aggregate performance.
While accepting the award, an elated Akpabio said it would spur him to do more for Akwa Ibom people.
Dedicating the honour to Akwa Ibom people who gave him the opportunity to serve, the governor said he would continue to answer his critics with the commissioning of more projects in his second term.
While assuring the people of more developmental projects in the next four years, Akpabio challenged other Nigerians and Akwa Ibomites in the Diaspora to visit the state in order to get first hand information; noting that to be uniformed is to be deformed.
The night which featured other interesting events light the victory ballroom dance; cultural entertainment as well as a birthday toast to the newly sworn-in Deputy Governor, Obong Nsima Ekere, attracted an unprecedented crowd of mixed social and political personages.
The chairman of the Inauguration Planning Committee, Mr Umana Okon Umana, noted that Akpabio deserved all the accolades and honour, and urged that he should further be celebrated for the victory in the last governorship election.
According to him, Governor Akpabio is synonymous with development, adding that Nigerians had the rare privilege of benefiting from four years of what he described as “brilliant chapters” of good governance. He then added that the next four years were worth the efforts of Akwa Ibom people in reelecting the governor.
Akpabio, he said, has changed the history of development and governance in Nigeria and has been adjudged the best of the best be local and international assessors; hence remains a leader to watch.
