Eket Rallies Support for Governor Akpabio
The people of Eket Senatorial district in Akwa Ibom State have vowed to vote overwhelmingly for the re-election of Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio for a second term even as the support base of the Governor swelled with the defection of thousands of members of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The Eket senatorial district chairman of the party, Hon. Nse Bassey Ekpenyong said that the governor’s performance in his first term had made him past a litmus test that has prompted people of the senatorial district to rise in one accord in supporting the governor’s second term. He assured that they will deliver a hundred percent of the votes to Akpabio.
On his part, the minister of housing and urban development, Chief Nduese Essien described Governor Akpabio as an excellent performer who has done exceedingly well in laying a good foundation for the development of the state. Another chieftain of the party and former special adviser, Chief Joe Udobia thanked the governor for his numerous achievements for the state, saying that he has done what God sent him to do in the state. Thus, his election will be easily done.
He, however, advised the governor to view the activities of detractors as a spur for him to do more. According to him, “He that wrestles with you strengthens your nerves. Your antagonist is your helper. You have gone through fire and water. If the Bible were to be written again, you deserve a chapter,” he said.
Also addressing the rally, Senator Etang Umoeyo described Governor Akpabio’s achievements as Tsunamic and phenomenal, optimistic that he would take the state to Eldorado in the second term. In the same vein, Chief Ikpoto Okon Osung assured the governor that the Oro nation stood on the earlier endorsement by the Oron Development Union that no Oron person would contest against him in the coming election otherwise such a person would not have the support of the Oron people. He said Akpabio should expect massive victory in the area The immediate past chairman of the state PDP, Chief Otu Ita Toyo and Sir Edet Amana also spoke in glowing terms about the governor’s performance, emphasizing that his second term bid was already a done deal.
There were also solidarity messages from chairmen of local government areas in Eket senatorial district who assured that they would deliver the governor in the April gubernatorial election.
But the gubernatorial ambition of the Action Congress of Nigeria, (ACN) in Akwa Ibom State, Senator John Akpanudoedehe on Monday was dealt a serious blow following the defection of a chieftain of the party and former commissioner for information in the state, Chief Chris AbasiEyo and thousands of his supporters to the PDP during the PDP campaign rally for Eket senatorial district.
Speaking on behalf of other defectors, Chief Eyo said they decided to leave the ACN because they have seen that the party had nothing to offer to the people, and as such could not follow it to its imminent failure. “I have the right to return to my original place. The broom will not be able to sweep the flood. We have seen that there is no party like the PDP. Others are sinking sand. That is why we are back; this time around, to stay,” the former commissioner stressed.
The returnees, most of whom were former local government and ward executives were jointly received by the South South zonal chairman of the PDP, Chief Edet Mkpubre and the state chairman of the party, Prince Uwem Ita Etuk.
In his response, the governor thanked the people for their unwavering support to the party. Akpabio noted that in 2007, the zone had given him the highest number of votes and is the economic nerve centre of the state. He promised that in his second term, he would cite in the area the Ibom Industrial city and Ibaka deep Seaport projects. He also reiterated his commitment towards citing at least one industry in each local government area in the senatorial district. Governor Akpabio said very soon contracts would be awarded for massive road construction in the area.
The high point of the rally was the presentation of flags to candidates of the party in the national and state house of assembly elections. We gathered that the campaign train would move to Ikot Ekpene Senatorial district on March 2, 2011.
