Today [May 29, 2009], Nigerians have a real reason to celebrate ten consecutive years of the democratic system of government. As with the human growth process, it has been quite dramatic through the ten years: from infancy through the weaning and teething years, from milk to solid food years, from painful through happy moments…. the growth process continues.
Through those same processes has been the growth pattern of our beloved Akwa Ibom State in ten democratic years. It has been a democratic life in working progress and history in the making for the young state, even as she experiences various kinds and levels of growth through disappointments, blessings, and various democratic dividends.
We thank God for sustaining the Akwa Ibom State through these ten years. Prayerfully and hopefully our state will age gracefully in unity, and prosper tremendously as we become faithful and wise stewards of all material and human resources that God has richly bestowed on us.
It is obvious that we have lost many things and gained some things during the ten democratic years. But, let us count our many significant blessings of the past two years, naming them one by one. It will pleasantly surprise us what the Lord has done for the Akwa Ibom State.
Good democratic leadership is the common denominator for blessedness in nations and states. By Gov. Godswill Akpabio’s leadership, we have become a happy and progressing people united in Akwa Ibom State to set examples of blessedness and prosperity that source from God, which things come to us by way of our adopted democratic form of government.
Let us be mindful of God as the True Democrat: Isaiah 33:22 [KJV] declares:
For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us.
Scripture paraphrased is that God is the King (the Executive), He is the Law Giver (the Legislature), and He is the Judge (the Judiciary). True democracy founds and abides in God: the stronger a nation practices the democratic form of government, the more prosperous her people become.
By Him, who is the deep root and flourishing tree of the true democratic government, must our elected leaders abide in order to succeed and bring forth much democratic fruit.
In the spirit of celebrating the Democracy Day, and joining with the multitude of progressive Akwa Ibom State people – especially of those scattered in the Diaspora, I congratulate His Excellency – Chief Godswill O. Akpabio and all members the executive, legislative and judicial branches of the democratic government of Akwa Ibom State.
God bless the Akwa Ibom State!
God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
